How the number works
An old card is nine digits and a letter: two digits of birth year, three digits for the day of the year, four for the serial, then V or X. A new card is twelve digits: four for the year, three for the day, five for the serial.
The day of the year is counted as though every year had 29 days in February, and 500 is added for women. So 349 means 14 December, and 849 means 14 December for a woman.
